About Dress Circle of York

Dress Circle of York came into being in 2002 when Stephen and Jill Outhwaite brought the theatrical costume hire business into an empty barn on their 150 acre farm. Encouraged by the government to diversify, Stephen with a history of acting, directing, running a youth theatre and theatrical make-up and Jill with experience of costume and a history degree, took the first step into developing Dress Circle.

The business has grown and developed in a way not dreamt of and now has a team of staff with a wealth and diversity of experience in costume and the theatrical world.

Our Team

Sue has been involved with the 1812 company at Helmsley for many years and has a vast experience of being a wardrobe supervisor, costume maker and dressing shows with a particular fondness for anything historical.

Elaine brings her experience of design and craft and nine years of wardrobe supervisor with the Flying Ducks Youth theatre. She especially likes to think outside the box and so particularly enjoys the extravagance and creativity of pantomime.

Caroline has many years experience of design and sewing from her fashion degree, making wedding dresses and exquisite dolls. She loves costume generally and enjoys revamping and redesigning outfits.

Susan is organised and enthusiastic and loves everything vintage. She can often be found at vintage sales and festivals looking for bargains. She is a keen dancer and makes some of her own outfits for the 40s and 50s inspired events she goes to.

Starting as a Saturday girl seven years ago, Sophie has brought her experience of acting, dance and choreography to her knowledge of costume. She has recently graduated from Nottingham Trent University with a degree in Costume Design and Making.

Heather originally came to us on work experience from school and has been with us now for four years. With a talent for acting, singing and dancing, Heather enjoys the theatre and working with costume.

With plans to study costume at university, Charlotte has just completed her A levels and is waiting for her results. She loves acting and singing and often appears on stage with Pick Me Up Theatre.
